Haiku: Feathered Friends

When I started trying to write something about “feathered friends” for One Deep Breath this week, I was surprised to realize that my thoughts were all rather negative about birds. (I had quickly rejected my “Farrah Fawcett’s Hair” poem.)

Anyway, I see the hawks and the turkey vultures around here and I’m always awed. And I’m simply enthralled by the neighborhood woodpecker. But what comes out of me? Bad vibes about crows, turkeys and pigeons.
That’s the best it’s going to be for me. I’m sure others will have praiseworthy haiku. Go check them out.

Outdoor cat teases
by leaving her food bowl full.
Crows swoop down then flee.

Wild turkeys thrive
here for want of predators.
Dog is bad pilgrim.

Children awestruck at
pigeon-saturated sky.
I mutter “winged rats.”

Pigeons are indeed winged rats, but then if that is so what is a vulture? A winged mega rat?

I especially like the image in the first haiku of the cat baiting the crows. And you'll get no argument from me about pigeons being winged rats.

This is just how I felt when I saw the topic, but I like your haiku because they're from your experience, that last one really made me smile.

I love the humor you brought to this post. I enjoy birds, all birds, but understand how some might be a real turn-off at best. Your humor is good combat for the negative bird vibes.

Many of my experiences with birds have been negative but hope lives on. Hitchcock might have helped me attract those vibes??

I love all 3 haiku! And my favorite line of all is "Dog is bad pilgrim" -- this had me holding my sides with laughter!

I hate, hate pigeons. Well, to be honest, I can't stand birds being close by at all. I like to see birds eating at a bird feeder, just not up-close and personal. I think it stems from the barn swallows dive-bombing me when I was a kid. Little b@#*ards.

We have a back alley at work and if I can't find a parking spot out front, I'm forced to park in the back and enter work through the alley. The pigeons are always waiting for me. I swear it. Just to make me scream like a ninny.

Rats with wings, but not as smart.

It is interesting how many people I've met have negative attitudes about birds. The lady renting our downstairs when I was little was petrified of them. Anyway, these were interesting little stories all in themselves. Great take on the prompt!

Winged rats of the sky -- there are way too many of them in this world...

I enjoyed your haiku. I like birds - even pigeons in small numbers, though in large numbers pigeons are scary and yes winged rats indeed.
