Jump One, Jump Twosday #19: The Jester v. The Peacenik

Forbes came out with its latest list of the top-earning dead celebrities. Many famous – and still dead – folks made the list. So let's play a game with the top two. Same rules: two people; pick one; ignore sexual orientation as necessary; ignore their death status.

Jump One is none other than Elvis Presley himself. Dead since 1977, having gorged himself and medicated himself beyond recognition, Elvis was the man the mothers of those in my generation venerated. My mom, while not immune to his charms, was less a fan than many others. The day I heard he died, I saw firsthand how his death left his fans crying and bereft. A know-it-all teen at the time of his death, and someone who conjured up in her mind one of the many horrid Elvis flicks at the mention of his name, I was quite puzzled by the adoration I saw others hold for him. Thirty years later, I no longer think of the crappy films, but I’m only drawn to a few of his songs.

Jump Two is in second place on the money-making dead celeb list: John Lennon. Too young to appreciate the Beatles at the time – I was totally more distraught over the breakup of The Monkees than I was of The Fab Four’s demise – I became a true fan of Lennon’s just as Double Fantasy was being released. Unfortunately, he was murdered before he could support Double Fantasy with concerts and other promotions. The night after he was murdered was the very first night I saw Springsteen in concert. He played for four-and-a-half hours that night in tribute to Lennon. Ask me who my favorite Beatle is nowadays, co-habitating as I am with the Brit and our offspring, and it takes me but a nanosecond to answer.

For you, is it Jump One?

Jump One: Elvis Presley
Or Jump Two?

Jump Two: John Lennon
Talk about giving broad hints! Yeah, I choose Lennon. For everything he stood for, for his incredible talent, for his love of his wife, and for his love of Sean. I’m sorry he didn’t heal his relationship with his first-born son before his death. I hear “Imagine,” and I can easily cry. I suspect I’m not alone.

Want to play? Or can’t you get over the dead aspect of it? Choose fat Elvis or young Elvis, pre-Ono Lennon or post.

Absolutely 100% young Elvis. I LOVE Elvis. When we went to Graceland I was moved to tears. He's my guy.

"Beatles 4-Ever" - I'm going with Lennon here, which is one more reason I can't move back to Memphis (although I will reluctantly admit that young Elvis was kinda hot).

Young Elvis was to die for. So handsome.

Lennon has always been my least favorite Beatle. I know he was smart and funny, but for some reason he has always rubbed me the wrong way.

Being an ex-Memphis girl, there is no other choice but Elvis! Good thing I like him. ;)

You are not alone. I will never get over it, and I'm also too young to have been part of the Beatles era, I still adored them. Epecially John, the Beatles were it, of course, The Monkees were high on the list too. I still can't believe someone actually killed John Lennon. How senseless is that? BTW, I meant to tell you that I remember my father crying over Robert Kennedy's death. Man, we grew up in a time didn't we?

Great Jump One Jump Two Tuesday.

I am picking John, too. Why? I don't know but when I read the prompt, I just knew...

I'll jump the pre-Yoko John - more like the "Rubber Soul" version because I was a kid then and simply adored The Beatles. Loved the whole longer hair and suit combos!

Most definitely Elvis! He is, after all, the king!

Agony, but in a good way. Elvis when he was young - one of the most beautiful men on the planet. But John Lennon - a poet, agitator, artist and one helluva bloke, although not a looker. I don't know...beauty or brain?

I think... beauty.
Yes I am shallow, sue me.

Hard to choose. They're both eually great to me. Something about Lennon's 'indieness' though. ;D

Ah, this is a difficult one. The young Elvis was soooo attractive, and he had good moves on the dance floor and we know what that means. This is just for a jump, right? Not some long term relationship requiring conversation? If so, then the answer must be based on sex appeal, and yes, I'm going for young Elvis. This answer surprises even myself. I had no idea.

The Beetles are just so dull. Especially Lennon. And they always took themselves way too seriously.

I'm going for young Elvis. From the Blue Hawii days.

Lennon, absolutely. I was 12 when he was killed, and I can still remember how shaken I was.
