Hey, You Look Familiar

Sunday Scribblings' prompt this week is "Dear Past Me, Dear Future Me." Where to begin? I'm not one for regrets, for fixating on what I might have done differently so I'd not be who I am or where I am today. And I doubt a post on the virtues of "Take that entry-level job at Google!" would do much. [Tho', damn, don't you wish your younger self had done just that?]

Dear Patois at 12,

Put that freakin' cigarette down! You look absolutely ridiculous. You think you look cool, don't you? You don't. You look like an idiot.

Love,
You Nearing 50

Dear Patois at 18,

Smoking again, are you? For someone who is purportedly smart, you're a total idiot. And what the hell are you doing hanging out with those over-the-top crazy dorm mates? The drugs will get you through for a bit, but you'll end up burning up so many brain cells you won't remember diddly-squat 30 years from now.

Love,
You Nearing 50

Dear Patois at 25,

I know he seems like the right man for you, but you're young. He's old. I know you think you'll never want children. But you will. And you'll be sorry you wasted these years working, working, working and spending, spending, spending. And put out the damn cigarettes already, will you?

Love,
You Nearing 50

Too bad we couldn't really send letters back to ourselves. I would have avoided a lot of stupid stuff and people.

I like the idea of sending multiple letters to ourselves at different points in our lives...and I'm sure many of us would have a recurring theme, ala your "put that damned thing down"

'Put that cigarette down'! Ahahaha! Yes, indeedy .. I never took up smoking, but there are certainly bad health habits in my past.

It says much about human nature that you have to keep repeating that one, and you do it even though you know your younger selves won't listen. LOL!

I so need to write that letter. It would cover several posts I think.

And maybe we should make those letters available to our children at relevant times.

Or maybe not.
