Shame on Me

I've heard the same thing that the Sunday Scribblings folks have about shame: "it's the only emotion just as powerful in recollection as it is on the spot." Anyone who has ever had cause to feel shame knows that's true. If we spend time recalling those instances, we begin to feel just horrible about ourselves and what we did, even if the deed was done 25 years ago.

Which is why, being the non-introspective sort, I've latched onto "shame" differently. I am hear to admit that when I first heard the word "shame," this song came to mind:

Shame, shame, shame
Shame, shame, shame
Shame, shame, shame
Shame of Fools

Oh, you don't know that song? Really? What's that, you say? It's really what? No. Let me Google that.

[Googling. Please stand by.]

Oh, crap, you're right. It really is Chain of Fools. I am SO embarrassed.

Sing it, Aretha.

So, tell me, folks. What mondegreens have you experienced that make you redden with shame? [My favorite columnist of all time, Jon Carroll, has collected mondegreens through the years. Check out his columns from the San Francisco Chronicle here.]

After hours of delving into the more serious side of this issue for my own response to the prompt, it was wonderful to read your more light-hearted take on it!

Merci!

I like that you took a light hearted approach to the prompt, when it is such a serious subject. Clever!

I have never heard of a mondegreen before. Thank you for enriching my vocabulary. I can't think of any at the moment, but I will keep trying.

Well, you know...it's not entirely your fault for mishearing those lyrics. Aretha Franklin isn't exactly known for her precise enunciation!
