It is Not My Fault

It is not my fault that I loaned you money and you didn't use it for its intended purpose.

It is not my fault that you didn't ask if you could use the money I loaned you for a different purpose.

It is not my fault that you are seven years late in paying me back or a couple years late in paying me back.

It is not my fault that I let you take a year (or more) off from paying me back.

It is not my fault that you can now not afford to pay me back.

It is not my fault that you appear to never intend to pay me back.

It is not my fault that I look at other things you are doing -- Disneyland vacations, IVF treatments and house purchases -- and wonder, "What. The. F#$k."

It is only my fault that I loaned you money in the first place.

*"You" is more than one person. Which means it is my fault for believing the next person to come around asking for money is the one person who will pay me back.

That's one benefit of not having any discretionary income - I have nothing extra to loan anyone.

My dad always said that if you lend money to people--particularly family--you have to go into with the assumption that they'll never pay you back because, odds are, they never will (otherwise they'd get a loan from a legitimate source. i.e. bank).

I suppose he's right. Sad, but right.

Michelle,

And you have to add to it the assumption that they will become to hate you because your mere presence in their lives in a constant reminder that they screwed you over.

Oh, I hate this. A really really good friend asked me to lend him money earlier in the summer. He did pay me back a few weeks later, but it could have been sad and ugly otherwise.
