I had been talking with the mother of Youngest's BFF before the start of the first soccer game of the season. It was a tournament of sorts, so there were plenty of games going on all around us. As the horn sounded the end of a match, parents of the players on the incoming team jockeyed to take front and center spots being vacated by the parents of the players who had just finished playing.
I walked ahead of others and set up mid-field. Two other mothers of boys on Youngest's team set up a meter away from me. One mother, forevermore known henceforth as Ye Bitche, began speaking to the other. "Where are all the other parents?" she wondered.
"I saw M," she said, referring to the mom of Youngest's BFF. "Her son is playing on our team now. Do you know that new boy? The one who didn't play select last year?"
The other mother murmured something in reply.
"I don't like his mother. She's rude," Ye Bitche said, going on to say other things about that nasty woman.
The other mother murmured something else in reply.
Ye Bitche said more about that nasty woman, complaining about how she had acted at the parent meeting.
It was then that the other mother turned toward me. I smiled and waved. She turned back and said something to Ye Bitche, who looked quickly down and then took a furtive glance at me.
Me, the nasty woman, who, in turn, just stared Ye Bitche down.
Is this going to be a long soccer season or what?
