Influentials

Springsteen & I comes out today, and I'm beside myself with anticipation. Pete puts up with it, this amazing connection I feel, and I'm pretty sure he gets it. The kids merely roll their eyes at their mother's unquenchable thirst for Bruce.

They don't get it.

They don't grasp the idolatry.

They don't comprehend the hold the man has had on me for more than three decades.

Frankly, they don't really give a shit, either. Because, you know, it's me and not them.

Self-centered snots. Kids, man, it's a good thing we're genetically wired to love them and nurture them and then mourn them when they go off on their own. Otherwise? Don't get me started.

My life is set to Springsteen songs. Every monumental moment over the past 33 years can be put to his music.

Oh, I get the head-shaking you're doing right now. I do. I'm a believer among atheists. [Actually, I'm an atheist who happens to belong to the religion of Bruce, but now I'm just getting technical. You've got your God with a capital-G and I've got my Bruce with a capital-B-R-U-U-U-U-U-U-U-U-U-U-C-E.]

A seeker of signs, I find one in the fact that I'm going to have another Bruce experience on the same day as an IRL hero of mine, Dale, celebrates his 60th birthday.

I have had a blessed life. I could point to several periods of stomach-crushing, breath-stopping stretches of time when all I wanted to do was escape to nothingness.

Can't we all?

But, without a doubt, I am blessed. And I am truly blessed that 60 years ago Dale was born. And I am further blessed that he became the man he is. And I am most assuredly blessed that, with his soul mate wife, Claudia, he saved me at one of my most vulnerable times.

He was a high school teacher whom I met when I was 15. Were I a believer, I do believe I would believe he was my guardian angel, that the two of them were sent here to watch over me.

In a real world where heroes disappoint time and time again, I am supremely grateful that my life has brought me this far, helped along long ago and time and again by Bruce and Dale.

I love Bruce, too. Since I was 13 and bought The River, first album I owned!

Sarah, I could pretty much set my whole life to songs on that double album.

First album owned?! Wow, you done good.

This totally made me smile. And how did I not know that Sarah was a fan?
